Flying foxes (AKA bats) play a major role in the regeneration of native hardwood forests and rainforests. Acting as efficient poo couriers, they pollinate as they feed, dispersing seeds as they move through the forest. A single flying fox can disperse up to 60,000 seeds in a night. They're highly mobile with some travelling 500 km within 48 hrs. That’s some bloody impressive batting (insert some kind of cricket joke here – I dunno, I don’t like cricket).

Despite the essential service they perform to Australia, the grey-headed flying flying-fox megabat of awesome (or Pteropus poliocephalus as cool scientist peeps call them) is a threatened species. Their numbers have rapidly declined over a relatively short period of time, which is bloody shitful. They are, however, protected by law.

Unlike other pollinators like bees and birds, who are also great – just saying, flying-foxes can transport pollen over vast distances and also disperse larger seeds. Unforts the national population may have declined by over 30% between 1989 and 1999 alone, with an estimate for the species in 2019 putting the number at 586,000. Considering flying foxes provide habitats for other flora and fauna species, adding value for hardwood timber, honey and native plant industries, losing them would put us squarely up shit creek, and we’re not doing that well as it is.

Climate change projections mean the impact of extreme heat events on flying-foxes will be a bloody disaster. And that’s not even considering the impact on other wildlife, particularly cryptic species, such as koalas and lyrebirds (my favourite), which is less obvious.

Not being able to sit here and do fuck all, we’re extending our Australian species range to include our mates the megabat. Designed exclusively for us by @ junglejimsmith funds will go to Bob Brown Foundation.

Let’s quit fucking with the forests, put our money where our shirts are and start the convo to help our native, fuzzy mates keep their homes and protect this beautiful land we live on.
